Davido has really had a quiet and good year, how that helped him is still a mystery. The self-acclaimed Baddest signed a deal with Sony and a couple of months ago dropped his first body of work under Sony, an EP titled ‘Son Of Mercy’.
The EP has five tracks with features from Simi, Nasty C and Tinashe. After listening to ‘Gbagbe Oshi’ the single off the EP, I really wanted to listen to the rest just to feed my curiousity really. Follow me on this short journey as I review the Son Of Mercy EP.
This is the first track on the EP, produced by Shizzi (as usual). The beat was good, production was splendid and Davido did what he usually does on a song, play around with words and simply just be Davido. What I really did not like about this song is the ‘O fagbada yo’ and the rest that he laced in there. The lyrics in the context did not even make any sense to me, I kept thinking why would he put those lyrics in the song. He then went further to say ‘O bu iso si’ which means ‘he farted’ or something (I’m paraphrasing now). The vibe was good, the beat was splendid, but the lyrics man.
Maga 2 Mugu Ft Simi
In a radio interview, Davido has said he could put a billion dollars behind Simi if he was to sign her. Perhaps that’s why he featured her in his EP. The collabo was not definitely like the Chemistry we witnessed with Simi and Falz or with Adekunle Gold, but she played her part. The song was produced by Kiddominant.
Coolest Kid In Africa FT Nasty C
This song sounds different from what Davido is known for, and at a point he sounds like he’s actually rapping. I could have sworn this was Future but we all know Davido’s voice even from our sleep so, no. The DMW boss really brought it in on this one, and South Africa’s Nasty C made it even a song to put on repeat. It’s like a new wave, I could continue writing about the production, mixing and even the auto-tune (I just had to mention that lol). The song already has a video.
This song was produced by Shizzi. A typical Davido song which involves a guy trying to woo a girl, and it also has this feel good ring to it. It depicts Davido as a loverboy trying to impress a girl. Nice song altogether.
How Long Ft Tinashe
This song is definitely the Hit single off this EP. Davido delivered on every aspect of this song and American singer Tinashe complemented on the track perfectly. The beat made it sound different, the song also had a fusion of two cultures. This song would be on repeat for days.
Overall the EP is good, it is not meant to be super duper dope as its just an indication of what to expect on the album. I didn’t expect more than I got from the EP. Personally, apart from How Long, Coolest Kid in Africa and Gbagbe Oshi the rest are just there.
: Overall I give it 5/10 Average for me, just because…
